Luxury will always be around, no matter what happens in the world.

So says Carolina Herrera, who has a store in this most ostentatious part of Dubai Mall. They must have taken a leaf out of Carine Roitfeld’ book. She has been recorded saying, “Fashion’s about extravagance, and everyone needs a bit of that.” Extravagance and decadence aside, and regardless of what we feel of the excesses of some strata of society, you cannot deny that the new Fashion Avenue is an amazing space that has to be experienced at least once.

I saw it for the first time last summer when it was just completed. The sense of space you get as you walk through is hard to put into words. The central area is bathed in light and the curves of the main walkways give the building tons of character. The addition of the light feature this year enhances the space even more. It runs the length of the central atrium, rising and falling in different places. I have tried to capture it in my picture. Fashion Avenue is not just about high-end clothes, it is about high-end luxury brands, so you have ultra chic cafes, jewellery, watches, shoes and perfumes. My favourite though is the Leica store at ground level. 🙂

One can’t help look back and take stock of how far Dubai has come with the services it provides to its residents. Having grown up here, I didn’t know about brands until I was well into my teens! Now you can be here and want for almost nothing as it is all available, admittedly at a cost. I think you’d be hard pressed to find anything of this scale anywhere else in the world. If there is, please tell us! We’ve just made it easier to leave a comment on the site using your social media login. We’re looking for a lot more interaction with you. I’ll leave you with a quote by Thornton Wilder:

The future is the most expensive luxury in the world.

To the future and until next time,

  1. Dubai has always been a luxury destination. It’s incredible what they have here for the super rich. I hope they don’t forget us mere mortals 🙂

    • I think the Mall caters to all levels of society. The free fountain shows are hugely popular. 🙂
