Dubai Goes Red
It’s that special time of the year again when Dubai looks its most gorgeous. Our orange, red and (sometimes) yellow flame trees are in full bloom. The fact that we have so many of them lining so many of Dubai’s roads is making it an absolute pleasure to be out and about driving. I shall be very sad when all the flowers eventually fall off and we return to our normal desert hues!
I hope you’ve seen them and are enjoying the scenery as much as I am. It’s one of those strange things that despite growing up here all my life, I never noticed the flame trees. Then, in 1994, I was away in the UK from January. On my return in early June, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Where had these trees been all my life and how come I had never noticed their bloom before? Their beauty is further enhanced by the incredibly complex flowers they throw out.
What does any of this have to do with leaving your mark or telling your story? Probably not a lot except that in a city where ‘seasons’ are barely seen, this magnificent show of flaming trees reminds us that the summer temperatures of 30+ herald the end of Winter and the beginning of Summer. So many memories get engraved on one’s being. That homecoming in June 1994 was because my mum had passed away after a prolonged illness. It was a very sad time and I wonder if that was why I suddenly noticed all the beauty on the streets.
Do you have a story of the flame trees? Please share it with us. We would love to read it. 🙂
